Kinect Sports Rivals producer defends the Xbox One’s motion tracker

There’s been much debate about the Xbox One’s need for a bundled Kinect sensor, but as it stands, one particular developer is quite pleased with Microsoft’s new motion tracker.

Rare studio development director Danny Isaac told Gamespot that it would be a “real shame” if Microsoft were to fragment the Xbox One’s user base by releasing a console bundle without the Kinect sensor included.

“20 years ago, I’d have a team that would be going crazy if they had this kind of technology, now we have it and people are like, well, I don’t want it,” Isaac told Gamespot. “It would be a real shame if we lost items like that.”

Isaac is an executive producer of Kinect Sports Rivals, the Xbox One’s first installment in Rare’s motion controlled sports sim series, which is set to release on April 8. Not completely drowning in the Kinect kool-aid, Isaac admitted that the platform’s first iteration was far from perfect.

“It was magical 70 percent of the time, and 30 percent of the time it was like, ‘okay, that didn’t quite do what I wanted it to do,’” he said. “But it was pushing the boundaries. It was trying to do something new. I think as game developers we need to be looking at these things. We can’t just keep putting out first-person shooters and sports simulations and those sorts of things.”

Recently, Microsoft reaffirmed its commitment to the Xbox One’s motion tracker, pointing out some of the peripherals unique features.
