With the growing obsession over native 1080p games and the Xbox One’s visually mixed catalog of titles, some people have grown concerned that Microsoft’s new console is incapable of consistently rendering titles at higher resolutions. While some of the company’s executives have placed the blame on game developers, others say that it’s only a matter of time.
“I fully expect that to happen,” Xbox director of development Boyd Multerer told OXM. “The [graphics processing units] are really complicated beasts this time around.”
A console’s development process typically gets easier over time. Take a look at the last wave of Xbox 360 games compared to the platform’s launch titles and it’s easy to see a difference in both performance and visuals. In the case of the Xbox One, the biggest challenge for game developers has been the console’s GPU and eSRAM setup, but Multerer is confident that programmers will master this new hardware with more practice.
“The hardware is basically baked, and what comes next is people discovering better software techniques to take advantage of it, especially in the ordering of the data so it flows through all the caches correctly, and I think there’s a lot of opportunity there,” Multerer told OXM.
Citing launch time constraints, Multerer feels that developers didn’t have much time with the Xbox One to get the most out of its hardware.
“Once these engines – the engine developers like Frostbyte and those guys – they really wrap their heads around this particular GPU architecture, then all of the titles coming out of that studio will take advantage of it and get better.”
It’s no surprise that a corporate executive would stand by his company’s product, however, we’re just curious how long it will take for studios to get a better understanding of the Xbox One’s hardware.
