Earlier this week, it was discovered that Activision had pulled the Xbox One box art of Beenox’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 from their website, suggesting that the title would only release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, 3DS, and PC… So practically everything except the Xbox One. Additionally, some users reported that a major german retailer sent an email to its customers, stating that the publisher cancelled and pulled Xbox One version of the game. Furthermore, an anonymous source claimed that the game had been “indefinitely” postponed. So what exactly is going on?
Speaking with GamingBolt, an Activision representative added some clarity to the situation:
“We are working with Microsoft in an effort to release The Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game on Xbox One. Currently, the game will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and the PC on 2nd May, 2014 as previously announced.”
Another statement sent to MCVUK echoed this report:
“We want to inform you that we are revising our release plans for ASM2 on Xbox One,” a release schedule update from Activision confirmed. “When and whether ASM2 is released on Xbox One is TBD.”
The original The Amazing Spider-Man received only above average review scores, and was of course a tie-in with the 2012 summer blockbuster. With the release of its sequel hitting movie theaters later this year, of course fans of Spider Man would’ve been aware of this title’s imminent release, but on a personal level, I didn’t even know this game was a thing until it was indefinitely delayed. Hopefully Microsoft and Activision can remedy the situation, but with such a sudden and, frankly, unexplainable delay this close to release, it’s probably safe to say that those who preordered this title for the Xbox One will have to wait at least a little longer than everyone else who planned on picking it up.
