Talking to your Xbox One? Here’s a list of things that Kinect can understand so far

The Xbox One’s Kinect sensor can understand a lot of voice commands, so much in fact that we’re putting together a list of what it can accept. While updates are sure to add more features, here’s what you can do so far.

General Commands

  • Xbox On” and “Xbox Turn Off” will turn your console on and off
  • Xbox, go home” or “Show my stuff” will take you to the home screen
  • Xbox, go to <App Name>” will open specific apps
  • Xbox, go back“ takes you to previous screen
  • Cancel an action by saying ”Xbox, cancel
  • Xbox, show menu” to display menu
  • Change the view by saying “Xbox, change view
  • Xbox, help” will display on screen help

Xbox Snap

  • Snap an application by saying “Xbox, snap <application name>
  • Xbox, unsnap” to unsnap an application
  • Xbox, switch“will switch between snapped applications

Search the web

  •  ”Xbox, Bing <say keyword>” (wait for the search dialogue box to pop up before you say your search out loud)

Skype on Xbox One

  • Xbox, Skype” to view contact list
  • Xbox, Skype <person name>” to view contact details for specific people
  • Xbox, call <person name>” to start a video call
  • Xbox, answer” to answer a video call
  • To answer without video say “Xbox, answer without video
  • Xbox, hang up” will end your call

Notifications & Xbox Live

  • Xbox, sign in” to sign in or “Xbox, sign in as <person>” to sign in as a specific person
  • Xbox, sign out” will sign out
  • Xbox, invite <name>” will invite a friend to play a game
  • Xbox, send a message” will send an Xbox Live message
  • “Xbox, notifications” to see notification list/history
  • Xbox, show notification” for more info on notification
  • Xbox, close notification” to dismiss a notification

Video on Xbox One

  • PlayStopPauseRewind, and Fast Forward are all obvious:  “Xbox, play”,  “Xbox, stop”, “Xbox, pause”, “Xbox, rewind”, “Xbox, fast forward”
  • Xbox, faster” will rewind or fast forward more quickly
  • Xbox, slower” will rewind or fast forward less quickly
  • Xbox, skip backwards” and “Xbox, skip forward” will jump to the previous or next chapter

Music on Xbox One

  • Xbox, play music” will start music from last active playlist
  •  “Xbox, pause music” will pause music
  • Xbox, next song” skips to next song
  • Xbox, previous song” plays previous song

TV on Xbox One

  • Xbox, watch TV” will tune to Live TV
  • Xbox, show guide” will display TV guide
  • Watch a specific channel by saying “Xbox, watch <channel name>
  • Xbox, mute” and “Xbox, unmute” will mute and unmute your TV
  • Xbox, volume up” and  “Xbox, volume down” will turn volume up and down

Misc:

  • Xbox, use a code” will scan a QR Code
  • Xbox, record that” to Record a game clip or highlight

A long list indeed, we’ll be putting these commands to the test and will be sure to document our experience no matter how good or bad.
