Microsoft to start punishing troublesome Xbox Live members

Microsoft is making adjustments to Xbox Live’s reputation system that will punish members who are disruptive and abusive to other gamers in the service’s community, the company announced today. The Xbox One’s reputation system’s ratings range from “Good” to “Needs Work” to “Avoid Me,” with rankings being based on player feedback. On the positive side of things, each time a person uses Xbox Live without being reported, their reputation improves.

As for players who do receive negative feedback from other gamers, they’ll start receiving notifications this week warning them about their status and will be encouraged to step things up. If the tomfoolery continues and they’re branded with an “Avoid Me” label, their matchmaking search will be reduced to fewer players and eventually Microsoft may take away privileges like Twitch livestreaming.

Since being announced last year, Microsoft has reassured gamers that the Xbox One’s reputation system isn’t quick to punish and that it instead takes a complete look at a player’s performance ranking. The company also specified that it filters false reports, however it didn’t detail its methods of doing this, for obvious reasons.

Last week during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Microsoft announced plans to reward players for their good behavior on Xbox Live. However, the company didn’t get into details on how this reward structure would work.
