Late last night, 343 Industries Studio Head Bonnie Ross tweeted, and was retweeted by Phil Spencer, a seemingly-deliberately enigmatical picture of an internal tournament that the studio is hosting.
Gold tier finals at internal #343i tournament. Great playing, great game! pic.twitter.com/Begax53Nhk

The caption accompany the picture in-and-of itself suggests no specific title, so allow me to speculate:
343i IS HOSTING AN INTERNAL HALO 2 ANNIVERSARY TOURNAMENT!!!!!!!!!!
As I read it – which is done through both a set eyes that long for the remake and a pair of nostalgia-tented glasses – the caption seems to so discuss a title that not only contains a tournament-worthy competitive multiplayer, but one that we’ve already seen before. “Great playing, great game!” *cough cough* Halo 2 *cough* In addition, I spy the illuminated Home Button of an Xbox One controller nestled comfortably in the hands of one of the players!
Clearly I’m reading into this more than was intended (or am I?) but the fact remains that:
- 343i is releasing an untitled Halo game some time in 2014
- McFarlane Toys just unveiled a new Master Chief figurine based on the hero’s appearance in Halo 2
- Master Chief’s voice actor claims not to expect Halo 5 until at least 2015
- Microsoft isn’t exactly denying the possible existence of the anniversary remake
- Phil Spencer believes that Halo 2′s multiplayer is the key feature that the studio would have to “nail” were they to rerelease it
So clearly Halo 2 Anniversary is just a rumor, right? Let us know what you think down below!
