GameStop seeing greater interest in Xbox One since price drop announcement

It hasn’t been even two weeks since Microsoft announced a price cut for the Xbox One, and we are already seeing this making ripples within the market, with retailer GameStop being the first to discuss the console’s newfound interest. In a post-earnings financial call, GameStop president Tony Bartel said the company is seeing “stronger demand” for the Xbox One since last week.

“I definitely think we’re already seeing in our stores with our reservation program as well as dialogue with PowerUp Rewards there’s a stronger demand as a result of the price drop. The good news for us is… we’ll sell a lot more units.

And that means there will be more [Xbox One] units out there to put software on.”

The new $399 Xbox One SKU will launch the day of Microsoft’s E3 conference, June 9th. When this new SKU launches and gets a few months behind it, we’ll have a better idea of just how affective this price cut will be.

Aside from GameStop, both Ubisoft and Take-Two think that Microsoft’s unbundling of Kinect is a good thing, and that it should help many many more Xbox One units enter the market. And between the Xbox One’s upcoming software lineup and its launching in an additional 20+ markets this September, I’d say that Microsoft is set to even the odds when it comes to hardware sales. I mean, they’re clearly behind at this point, but that’s in 13 markets with an SKU that most everyone hates. Fixing both the price point and the public opinion will definitely have a significant impact on their hardware sales.
