Bungie, the developer largely responsible for the popularity/success of online console gaming, has come out of their beautiful Bellevue studio to give a few words regarding Destiny’s competitive multiplayer, and the words (all one of them) are “Balance.”
Aiming to accomplish what very few have done before it, Bungie is pursuing a social-centrec competitive semi-open-world first person shooter that encourages players to work together with friends, cooperation with would-be foes, and/or embrace the wilds of the Lone Wolf life. However you choose to play, the don’t-call-it-an-MMO-FPS will have something for just about everyone, including the hardcore eAthlete. (Yes, I think I just made that term up.)
Regarding it’s competitive multiplayer, Destiny’s “The Crucible” will offer several staples of the much-loved multiplayer mode. Character, Cinematic, and Technical Art Lead, Tom Sanocki, had this to say regarding Destiny’s multiplayer decisions.
“The largest team size is 6v6 and that’s an intentional design decision. We decided to do that because that is the best way [we can demonstrate] the style of [the] competitive multiplayer [that we want]. This way everyone has a role and feels they can contribute.”
“We’re still tuning that as we finish off the game and find that optimal balance. The idea is you’ll find something that feels live, vibrant and interesting. You won’t feel a low.”
It’ll be interesting to see how the internet takes this news, because last time a highly anticipated game from a renowned multiplayer game designer was announced to feature “only” 6v6 player totals due to intentional design decisions, a select “few” individuals got really mad for some reason – claiming that 6v6 is a “last-gen” player count.
Considering the fact that their platform will be getting a bunch of timed exclusive dlc, what are the odds they keep their mouths shut this time around?
Destiny will be releasing on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, and PS4 this September. Bungie recently announced the Limited and Ghost editions of the game, which you can read all about here.
