Microsoft’s Phil Harrison isn’t concerned about Sony’s quick start with the PlayStation 4, which reached 6 million consoles sold worldwide earlier this month, saying this hardware generation is ”a marathon, not a sprint.”
Microsoft’s latest reveal placed the Xbox One’s sales at over 3 million consoles sold back in January, but has been virtually silent since then.
“We’re 120 days into our platform lifecycle,” Harrison told VentureBeat. ”You know better than anyone that this is a marathon, not a sprint. We’re happy with our plan. We’re happy with the performances of our key franchises and key partnerships, most notably Titanfall in the last couple of weeks. You can see independent surveys and studies showing our sell-through doubling in the U.K. as far as hardware. We have a fantastic lineup we’ll reveal more of at E3 and beyond. We have a lot of great surprises to come.”
In addition to discussing the Xbox One’s success with software, Harrison referenced the platform’s upcoming expansion to 26 new territories in September.
“We announced, this morning, an additional 26 countries and regions for Xbox One coming in September,” said Harrison. “That will be 39 markets where Xbox One will be available by the end of the year. Partnering that with the ID@Xbox program means that I hope we find really culturally relevant local products and experiences coming to our platform. That will really accelerate us.”
With the Xbox One heading to so many new territories, it’s very likely that Microsoft could experience a sales spike during this particular period. The company has openly teased big announcements planned for E3 2014, so it’ll be interesting to see if these new details play an important role in the console’s success when it launches in these new markets.
