I’ve had an Xbox One in my house for a little over a week and I’ve come to the realization that I love my new console to pieces, but when it’s time to watch TV, a Blu-ray or even Netflix things get kind of complicated. I find myself asking: how am I going to control things this time around?
While the Kinect’s voice and gesture controls apply to just about every Xbox One app, speaking to your console in a loud room, or better yet a room you need to keep quiet (ever put a 1-year-old down for a nap?) can be a bit of a task.
Sure the console’s controller works pretty well too, but I’ve always considered using a gamepad to control video playback kind of clunky. It’s like I always accidentally bump a trigger which causes the move to skip a chapter forward or backwards and after years of watching TV and movies with a traditional remote control, a game controller just feels weird.
It turns out, Logitech’s Harmony universal remotes play nice with the Xbox One and after fumbling around with multiple control devices including the Android and iOS SmartGlass apps, I decided to pick up a Harmony 650. It’s an entry-level remote that feels great in your hands and controls up to five different devices. A modest investment of around $80 (or less if you shop around), that’s only about five bucks more than a controller and charger kit.
Yes, you have to spend a little money, but ask yourself, do you really want to shuffle through different remotes and devices, or would you rather just have something that can handle everything?
If your Xbox One is the centerpiece of your entertainment setup, a universal remote is definitely something to consider.
