Microsoft is reportedly imposing temporary bans against users of the Xbox One’s Upload Studio app due to profanity. This information comes from an ongoing Reddit thread where multiple users have posted about their access to the app being revoked.
What’s strikingly odd about this is that several M-rated games containing a lot violence and profanity are allowed to be uploaded without consequence. However, according to the Xbox Live code of conduct, users are prohibited from using profane words/phrases in their Gamertag, profile content or avatar action.
Microsoft issued a statement to the folks at Polygon addressing this matter:
“To be clear, the Xbox Live Policy & Enforcement team does not monitor direct peer-to-peer communications like Skype chats and calls,” the representative wrote. “Also, we take Code of Conduct moderation via Upload Studio very seriously. We want a clean, safe and fun environment for all users. Excessive profanity as well as other Code of Conduct violations will be enforced upon and result in suspension of some or all privileges on Xbox Live. We remain committed to preserving and promoting a safe, secure and enjoyable experience for all of our Xbox Live members.”
There’s definitely a fine line between moderating content and censoring people. As a father I wouldn’t want my kids watching videos inappropriate language, however, perhaps Microsoft should consider refining the Xbox One’s parental controls and adjust how user generated content is filtered. Maybe something along the lines of what YouTube does with videos.
