Following this morning’s since-terminated Amazon listing, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has formally announced Mortal Kombat X, but with the developer’s recent hints, this announcement doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The game is set for a 2015 release, and comes along side new trailer showing off an incredibly atmospheric battle between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.
The trailer, which you can see below, is proving to be somewhat questionable… Not for its terrible song-choice mind you, but because several outlets, such as IGN, are stating that the trailer “appears to be made almost entirely from gameplay footage.” I for one saw nothing but CG, which isn’t a bad thing, but if this is actual gameplay footage, I’ll (gladly) eat my hat.
Regardless of the trailer’s rendering techniques, a number of key features were shown off, including environmental interaction as well as the return of personal weapons. The video also shows off the X-Ray attacks that were introduced in the 2011 reboot of the franchise, which gruesomely depict body parts getting broken and bruised.
The official blurb for the trailer reads “Fueled by next-gen technology, Mortal Kombat X combines unparalleled, cinematic presentation with dynamic gameplay to create an unprecedented Kombat experience.” Might this suggest the title is skipping out on the Xbox 360/PS3? If so, that runs contradictory to the aforementioned Amazon listing, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Either way, it appears that Warner Bros. wanted to get ahead of the rumor mill and decided that announcing Mortal Kombat X early was a better decision than having everything leak and then announcing it, like we’ve seen several times already between Battlefield: Hardline and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
