Xbox One is up for per-order at Japanese retailers – Jumps to the top of multiple Best-Seller charts

If you thought the Xbox One would release DOA in Japan, you might want to reevaluate your assumptions. The console was made available for pre-order yesterday morning at many Japanese retailers, and contrary to popular (and logical) opinion, it actually managed to top several of the publicly-available charts.

Of all the data we saw collected, the most relevant information comes from that of Yodobashi Camera – one of the biggest electronic retailers in Japan (like the US’s Best Buy) and pretty much the go-to place for gamers to buy new consoles (like the US’s GameStop). The Day One Edition, Kinect included, immediately shot to number one after the pre-order was made available, and it’s still holding that position as of publishing this piece. For comparison sake, the Kinect-less SKU is currently sitting in 4th place.

According to Amazon Japan, the Day One Edition with Kinect managed to hold the top spot before having its throne reclaimed by the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. The Kinectless version has remained in third place throughout the console’s availability, with both SKUs now claiming in second and third slots.

Rakuten Books (also a popular electronics retailer) saw the Day One Edition sitting in first for several hours before being overtaken by Freedom Wars. The Kinect-less version showed a weaker performance, peaking at 5th place before sinking to 8th.

Not surprisingly, the most popular software is Forza Motorsport 5, which peaked at 3rd place on Rakuten and is now in 5th on Yodobashi and Amazon.

While the console isn’t sold out, managing to top these selling lists is no small feet for an American product (that isn’t an iPhone) when releasing into the Japanese market – especially when that product is an Xbox console. For comparison sake, inFAMOUS: Second Son, which sold over 35,000 copies its first week in Japan, never even came close to topping the charts when it was made available for pre-order.

It would be foolish to believe that these numbers could in any way correlate to day-one explosion like the one we saw from the PS4, but for an Xbox platform, these numbers are much higher than anything Microsoft has even come close to seeing in the past. The Xbox One seems to be set to make a very decent debut going into its September release in the Japanese market. It’s a shame that Sony is making it so that none of these gamers will be able to play Destiny.
