Peter Molyneux Calls Xbox One Kinect ‘A Joke’

Since it was first introduced in November of 2010, the Kinect has received more than it’s fair share of criticism. Last week Fable creator and former Microsoft designer Peter Molyneux added his opinion to the mix, with more than a few harsh words for the peripheral:

It feels like an unnecessary add-on to me. Maybe it’s because we’re in England, and it doesn’t really use the TV stuff, but it feels more and more like a joke. My son and I sit there saying random things at it, and it doesn’t work. They could cost-reduce it [by removing Kinect]. I’m sure they’re going to release an Xbox One without Kinect. It would be unthinkable that they wouldn’t.

No matter what you might think of the Kinect, you do have to admit he has a point about one thing: dropping the Kinect would allow them to reduce the Xbox’s price point by quite a bit, which would certainly help with sales numbers. Of course, Microsoft felt the need to have it’s own voice heard on the matter, with Xbox head Phil Spencer saying:

Right now, [dropping Kinect is] not the number one request from people. Usually it’s, ‘Where are the great games?

So it seems that, for the time being at least, dropping the Kinect isn’t in the cards. What do you think though? Do you like the Kinect, or do you think dropping it would be the smarter move?
