Halo 2 Anniversary may not run at full 1080p – Frank O’Conner gives details via NeoGAF

Halo 2 Anniversary remastered Grunts

Ever since the announcement of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, fans of the legendary franchise have been digging for any and all of the information that they could get their hands on, which has lead to some mixed-messaging and confusion. One of the subjects under question is none-other than Gen. 8′s end-all-be-all: Resolution. Yes! How many p’s will this master collection be running at? Will the Xbone even be able to push out a Full HD image of 10+ year old games? Will you be able to notice the difference should it run at a sub-HD resolution? Or do you still give a crap about this subject?

Well, whether or not these issues affects your opinion, the resolution of Halo: The Master Chief Collection is, once again, up for debate. Thankfully, Frank O’Connor, Franchise Development Director for the Halo franchise at 343 Industries, has stepped into the fray to set the story straight.

Speaking on the (in)famous video game forum, O’Connor hopped on NeoGAF to relay the following information:

1. All [multiplayer] will be 1080p, 60fps, including H2 and H2 anniversary.
2. There’s a chance that H2 Anniversary campaign could run at a different resolution to accommodate the second frame buffer. But the intent is to overcome that hurdle.
3. The H2 Anniversary graphics are from relatively early [work in progress].
4. We’ll keep showing progress throughout the year using a process we call “game development.”
5. This or its opposite will still make certain posters mad, because they’re already mad and are looking for things to confirm that rage.

As you probably noticed, O’Connor stated that the guys over at 343 Industries has yet to nail down a definitive resolution for the Halo 2 Anniversary campaign. This is due entirely to the fact that they are running dual frame buffers – which, for those of you who don’t know, means that the game is essentially running two graphics engines at the same time, rendering and storing the images for both versions at 1080p simultaneously. Due to 343i’s Anniversary remakes and their ability to allow players to switch back and forth between the new and classical graphic draws at the push of a button, the team has yet to establish or announce what resolution the campaign of Halo 2 Anniversary will be running at.

It is worth noting, however, that these graphical “issues” are in no way related to any of the other portions within the game. The campaigns for Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 3 and Halo 4, as well as all the multiplayer functionality – including Halo 2 Anniversary – will all run at 1080p/60fps.

As it stands now, the team is aiming for 1080p across every aspect of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, but until the team gets closer to launch, we won’t know for sure how many pixels we’ll be looking at when the game launches on November 11th later this year.
